The Importance of the Playbook in Legal Workflows

Fall is officially upon us, and while Americans are once again enjoying their Sunday football binges, it is a perfect time to recognize the importance of a good playbook. For those that have never played a sport (or even warmed a bench), a playbook is a collection of strategies and formations designed to lead a team to victory. It is an essential tool that puts ideas in motion. All teams need them – including legal teams.

As new technology and updated processes are added to current workflows, it is common for miscommunications to occur between your team and new service providers. It is essential for the early success of any new strategy to anticipate and overcome these roadblocks, much like a wide receiver juking around the defense. It is the job of the coaches to determine the most open path to the end zone, or in this case the legal ops expert and provider. By taking the time to visualize targets, identify specific activities and build a model for improvement, you will give your team the guidance they need to execute your vision.

Every team is unique, and every playbook should reflect that. The best playmakers rely on their years of experience, past mistakes and triumphs, and ability to seek out new talent to fill the gaps. When considering the first steps of integrating a new technology or service, you and your provider must do the same to give your team the greatest shot at success.
